Should report cards come with user manuals? As states and schools strive to provide more information to parents, they are creating complex grading systems designed to go beyond pass and fail. I discuss the pros and cons of this trend. In a guest column, a community advocate talks about how dropout diversion efforts need to begin in middle school, where students often fall off the radar.
