Atlanta Forward: Education

By Maureen Downey
March 29, 2015

Next year, Georgia voters will be asked to grant the state new and unprecedented powers to step in and take control of schools deemed to be failing. In a hard-fought battle, the governor won his Opportunity School District, but will it offer real opportunities to children? I take up that question today. And readers sound off on the governor allowing an education advocacy group to treat him and other legislators to a field trip to New Orleans to visit the state-run schools there. In a powerful guest column, a Georgia State University student discusses a video of alleged bullying on a Gwinnett County school bus and describes her own brother’s experiences in DeKalb County.
