Atlanta Forward: Education

By Maureen Downey
Aug 9, 2015

The authors of a new book contend U.S. schools are not preparing students for a world in which problem-solving and innovation are critical. I discuss the book and its contention that we focus on credentials rather than competencies and give too much weight to test scores and AP classes. In a guest column, a social studies teacher discusses the retreat by the College Board on its AP U.S. History course, which has been criticized by conservatives in Georgia and elsewhere as presenting a leftist view of America. Readers sound off on whether teachers should earn extra pay for their advanced educational degrees and years in the classroom.
