WOOD, Sarah Elaine
January 31, 1940 – September 26, 2021
On January 31, 1940, Sarah Elaine Jones was born in Athens, GA. She attended public school and would go on to matriculate at Spelman College. Sarah and Richard "Ricky" Wood grew up in the same Athens neighborhood and began dating during their college years at Spelman and Morehouse. They were married in 1961 and were blessed with two daughters, Saritha and Sherri. Later they would welcome a third daughter, Sherrise. Over the years, Sarah and Richard would welcome many children into their family always willing to open their home and share their unconditional love.
Sarah and Richard joined St. Paul's Episcopal Church in 1966. As a member of the `Ambassadors, Sarah held positions as secretary and treasurer, planned the Annual Honor Recognition Sunday, and served as an usher. She was also a member of the Les Dames Social Club.
Sarah worked for the City of Atlanta as a crossing guard at Peyton Forest Elementary School and transitioned to the classroom with the Atlanta Board of Education at Mary McLeod Bethune and Ralph McGill Elementary Schools in the role of paraprofessional. She retired in 1992 and began a new career as Grammy.
"Grammy", as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren - Courtney Jamaal Whitaker, Shaunya Sade Harden, and Frederick Douglas "Rich" Powe III – spent countless hours caring for her grandchildren. She was happiest when all of her children and grandchildren were in her presence. She loved each of them without judgement and enjoyed watching them grow up.
Sarah leaves to mourn her husband, Richard "Ricky" Wood; daughters – Sherrise Whitaker, Saritha Wood Harden (Samuel), Sherri Wood-Powe (F. Douglas); grandchildren- Courtney Jamaal Whitaker, Shaunya Sade Harden, and Frederick Douglas "Rich" Powe III; and a host of "adopted" children.
Sarah was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Ann Jones; her adopted mother, Eva L. Pope; her adopted sister, Florine L.P. Bussey; and all her siblings – Willie James Reid, Daisy Reid, Helen Hall Jones, Daisy Reid, Janie Mae Howard, Jessie Reid and Lamont Reid.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, ATTN: Sarah Wood Memorial Fund. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 3, 2011, 11 AM, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 306 Peyton Road, SW, Atlanta, GA 30311. Interment will follow the service at the St. Paul's Columbarium.
