SHELNUTT, Rev. Fred Gentry
Rev. Fred Gentry Shelnutt, 94, of Newnan, passed away Sunday, October 31, 2021 at his home at Wesley-Woods of Newnan-Peachtree City. He was born November 25, 1926 in Roopville, GA to the late John Amos Cross Shelnutt and Winnie Mae Gentry Shelnutt. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Meriam McCollough Shelnutt. Rev. Shelnutt attended Young Harris College before receiving a Bachelor's degree in English from Emory University and Master's of Divinity degree from The Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He devoted his career to the Lord by serving many parishes in the United Methodist Church including, the Coweta Circuit, St. Stephen's UMC, Canton FUMC, Jonesboro FUMC, Smyrna FUMC, College Park FUMC, Fayetteville FUMC, N. Decatur UMC, and Hapeville FUMC-Emory Chapel. Extending past his devotion to his family, he enjoyed gardening, reading, and the company of others. Throughout his ministry he served on multiple boards and committees in the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church and Young Harris College. He was also active in many civic organizations throughout his career. The funeral is 11 am Thursday, November 4, 2021 at Newnan First United Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Robinson and Rev. Dee Shelnutt officiating. Following the funeral service, the family will greet friends in the Annex of Newnan First United Methodist. Burial will be at 3:30 pm at Powder Springs Cemetery on Old Austell Road, Powder Springs, GA. Rather than flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Young Harris College at https://www.yhc.edu/giving The family requests everyone attending the services wear a mask. Shelnutt and his wife Sandra; grandchildren, Stephen Dale Shelnutt, Jr., Meriam Blevin Shelnutt and her husband Charles Harlan, Laura Shelnutt Kennedy and her husband Franklin, Genna Shelnutt and her husband Todd Sevier, Leslie Meriam Shelnutt; great-grandchildren, Parker Allen Kennedy, Pacey June Kennedy; nieces, nephews and extended family.
