NASH, Katherine Rogers
Katherine Rogers Nash, 64, of Brookhaven, Georgia, passed away on October 14, 2023. She was born on December 11, 1958 in Houston, Texas to Dorothy Smith Rogers and Weldon Wayne Rogers. She was raised in Houston, Oklahoma City, and Bloomington, Illinois before moving to the Atlanta area. She received her Bachelor of Music ('81) and Master of Music ('84) degrees from Indiana University in Bloomington Indiana. A soprano, she sang for The Opera Carolina in Charlotte, The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and The Roswell Lyric Opera. She sang with the choirs of various churches in the Atlanta area, most notably North Avenue Presbyterian, First Atlanta Christian Church of Atlanta and the Unitarian Universalist Church of Atlanta. Her professional stage roles included Norina in Don Pasquale, Baby Doe in The Ballad of Baby Doe, Fiametta in The Prima Donna, Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflote, Blonchen in The Abduction from the Seraglio, and the title role from Armida, performed in Bremen Germany. She was a professor of Voice at LaGrange College, and taught vocal techniques and piano lessons to numerous students for many years.
Kathy was a lifelong UU, and supporter of many liberal causes. Her love of nature was expressed by her beautiful garden and home surrounded by heritage oaks. She enjoyed science fiction and regularly attended science fiction conventions. Notably she attended every Dragoncon convention from the first one held in 1987 until the present. She was a talented seamstress and knitter and costume creator. She had a keen interest in pre-Columbian antiquities and this interest took her several times to Mexico and Central America. Her love of travel inspired her to visit dozens of U.S. national parks throughout the west as well as many European countries. She and her husband spent a month in the Peoples Republic of China as part of the process of adopting their daughter.
She is survived by her loving husband, Joseph Adamson Nash, to whom she was married for 35 years; and a daughter, Linhua Dorothy ("Xiu Xiu") Nash née Jiang Xiu Gong. She leaves behind her five beloved cats who were a great source of comfort during her final illness. She is also survived by two sisters, Mary Mims (Marietta, GA) and Laura Keck (Alpharetta, GA); sisters-in-law, Meryl Dykstra (Conyer, GA), Wendy Nash (Atlanta, GA) and Janet Standen (East Point, GA); brothers-in-law, Jerry Jascomb (Alpharetta, GA), Steven Kirslis (Marietta, GA), Donald Standen, Peter Dykstra and Bill Milligan (Atlanta, GA); nephews and nieces, Derrick and Meryl Mims and their three children (Marietta, GA), Justin and Rachel Keck and their daughter (Canton, GA), Tristan and Lucille Britt née Keck (Savannah, GA) and James Dykstra (Woodstock, GA), Alyson Dykstra (Conyers, GA) and David Wagner (East Point, GA). She was preceded in death by her parents, Weldon Wayne and Dorothy Rogers; and by her in-laws, William Nash Jr., and Dorothy Nash.
A memorial service will held at Saturday, October 28, 2023 at 11:30 AM, at The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta located at 2650 N. Druid Hills Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30329.
