After three months on the run, a man wanted on murder charges in North Carolina was arrested Wednesday morning in Cobb County.

Tyrell Daniels, 31, was wanted on charges related to a deadly shooting June 8 in his hometown of Statesville, the Record & Landmark reported. Daniels, also known as Lil Buckey, was found at the Charlestowne Apartments in Kennesaw, the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

According to the Record & Landmark, the case began when investigators were called to the scene of a shooting in Statesville, then to a secondary scene at the county hospital where the victim, identified as 20-year-old Zion Treyshaun Gaither, was declared dead. The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office later secured an arrest warrant for Daniels.

Once Daniels was located by Cobb deputies, who were assisted by the U.S. Marshals Service, teams from both agencies responded to the complex on Creekside Drive, according to the sheriff’s statement. Marshals entered the complex and tried taking Daniels into custody, but he hid in the attic and would not come out.

Vehicles from the Cobb County Sheriff's Office were gathered at the apartment complex where Tyrell Daniels was arrested.

Cobb deputies and police officers, who also responded to the scene, set up a perimeter and helped evacuate the apartment building. When Daniels would not follow verbal orders to come out of the building, the marshals “deployed a chemical irritant into the attic space,” the Cobb sheriff’s office said.

The chemical set off the building’s fire alarms but helped the marshals take Daniels into custody “after a brief struggle,” the sheriff’s office said. No bystanders or law enforcement officers were hurt, but Daniels was treated by Cobb firefighters for exposure to the chemical irritant and other non-life-threatening injuries.

Daniels was booked into the Cobb County Adult Detention Center shortly after 9:15 a.m. and now awaits extradition to North Carolina, the sheriff’s office said.
