Janet Partain said she went to Joseph Avellino's house Monday to discuss stolen property. She had her 14-year-old son and 15-year-old nephew with her, according to WJW-TV.

The situation quickly escalated. Partain told police Avellino got a crossbow and fired it. She said she jumped in front of it to prevent the two teenagers from being injured and the arrow went through her cheek and out the back of her skull.

She somehow managed to drive herself to a nearby hospital.

"It was an odd sight to see someone with an arrow in their face and they're still conscious and talking to me," Cross County sheriff's Capt. Jeff Nichols told WJW.

Avellino, 34, was arrested and is facing a number of charges, including first-degree battery and endangering the welfare of a minor, WJW reported.

Partain, meantime, is still hospitalized, recovering from quite a serious injury.
