She said she came from German high society, claimed her father was a diplomat, an oil baron, and a big name in solar energy, and was generally living the life of a jet-setter.
In reality, Anna Sorokin was the daughter of a truck driver, and is accused of lying about her background -- and then some -- prosecutors have said.
Under the name of Anna Delvey, Sorokin lived in hotel rooms in New York City, in the lap of luxury, even saying she’d take a friend on an all-expense-paid trip to Morocco.
The friend was stuck with the tab to the tune of $62,000, prosecutors in Manhattan allege.
Sorokin has been charged with grand larceny and theft of services after law enforcement says she took $275,000 in a 10-month trip that took her to Omaha and Marrakesh, the AP reported.
She apparently had banks fooled, too. She was able to get a loan for $100,000. She spent $45,000 on just one month of personal expenses, and pocketed the rest, according to the AP.
But not everyone believed her story.
When trying to get $22 million in loans, one bank denied her because she didn't have the cash to make payments. Another bank asked to meet with a USB banker she said could verify her assets, the AP reported.
Sorokin arrived in the U.S. from Germany in 2016, but was born in Russia. She faces deportation to Germany no matter what happens in her larceny trial because officials said she over-stayed her Visa.
She may be able to make a name for herself in the end. Page Six reported last year that "Grey's Anatomy" and "Scandal" creator Shonda Rhimes had plans to write a Netflix series based on Sorokin's story.
