A mass shooting at a college campus in Roseburg, about 180 miles south of Portland, left 10 people dead, including the gunman, Thursday. Another seven people were wounded.
Here are five things to know about the incident, based on information available Thursday night:
- The shooting happened at around 10:30 a.m. Pacific time Thursday at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon.
- The identities of the victims may not be released until at least Friday, Hanlin said.
- Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin, who appeared at news conferences regarding the victims and the police investigation, was among hundreds of sheriffs who argued against new gun laws in 2013, according to Mother Jones.
- An uncle by marriage, Gary Evans, 62, told the Daily Beast that Harper-Mercer's mother, who is African-American, was single when he was born. His father, a "Caucasion," was not involved with his upbringing, Evans said. Evans said Harper-Mercer's mother was becoming a nurse when he married her sister in 1990.
