"The arriving officer asked for the fire department with the ladder. And he was able to coax the boy back into the open window, " Fresno Police Department  Lt. Joe Gomez told KFSN. "The door was unlocked, so the officers went inside the apartment and the mother was asleep, so she was totally unaware that the little boy was up there."

Gomez told KFSN the mother, Nicole Legere, 34, also had a two-year-old girl with her.

The building owner told KFSN the mother and another woman in the building are squatters who were living in the building without his permission.

The Fresno Bee reported that the oter woman was Julia Gutierrez, 30, who was arrested on an unrelated child endangerment warrant.

The mother faces charges for child endangerment and drug possession.

KGPE reported the children are in custody of Child Protective Services.
