The shelter took in 357 dogs in July and by late Saturday afternoon more than 130 of them had been adopted.

A small white Maltese was the first to be adopted.

Shelter Director Susan Garcia said several people starting lining up around 6 p.m. Friday to adopt the dogs.

The shelter usually closes at 5 p.m., but it stayed open Saturday until every person who registered got a chance to adopt.

The shelter is closed Sunday and Monday and will reopen Tuesday. The remaining dogs will be adopted through the regular process.

The dogs were seized from a kennel last month.
