Kalief Browder, who was jailed for three years without a trial at Rikers Island in New York, committed suicide Saturday at his home, authorities said.

In 2010, at the age of 16, Browder was arrested on suspicion of stealing a backpack. He spent two years in solitary confinement at Rikers Island though he was  never convicted of a crime.

While he was in jail, Browder tried to commit suicide multiple times.

During his confinement, security footage was released showing the then-teenager being thrown to the ground by an officer in 2012.

After leaving Rikers, Browder attended community college in the Bronx, earning a 3.5 GPA and working at the school as a tutor to GED students.

He later dropped out of college and last December was hospitalized in a mental health facility.

His mother found his body.
