It's not unusual for U.S. drones to be shot down or crash. However, seeing an Iraqi taking a smiling selfie with one on Twitter is a bit more rare.

The Pentagon confirms an MQ-1C Gray Eagle drone was lost in June following what the Pentagon referred to as "technical complications caused a loss of communications."

Buzzfeed reports things got more interesting when self-described Iraqi activist Steven Nabil took his photo in front of the unmanned craft near the city of Samawah.

The Verge reports the nearly-intact and unarmed drone drew a crowd after word got out about where it was.

The Hill says the drone was being used for surveillance and intelligence gathering. The Defense Department says they are working through channels with the Iraqi government to recover the aircraft.
