Richard Junkins lost everything when a fire engulfed his trailer in Madison County, Alabama, in 2015.
But he lost even more when deputies showed up 10 hours after firefighters put out the fire.
Mr. Bear, Junkins black Labrador, was shot and killed by sheriff's deputy Daniel De Jong when he was called to the area after a driver saw Junkins sitting in the road acting strangely, according to AL.com.
Junkins was taken into custody and arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. Junkins was found guilty at his bench trial but rather than pay the $100 fine, Junkins fought the charges.
After spending the night in jail, Junkins found Mr. Bear dead on the back porch.
The shooting of Mr. Bear did not appear in any arrest report, according to AL.com. It was recorded on De Jong's body camera. The footage was looked at by Chief Deputy Dave Jernigan and a review board which determined the shooting was within policy.
"(De Jong) did the right thing," Jernigan told AL.com.
The video, and any mention of Mr. Bear was not allowed during Junkins' trial, where he was found not guilty for disorderly conduct for obstructing traffic Wednesday.
De Jong still has not apologized to Junkins for shooting his dog.
