Nine people were killed in downtown Dayton, Ohio, on Sunday morning when a gunman opened fire outside a bar in the city's Oregon District.
At a news conference Sunday, Assistant police Chief Matt Carper identified the victims, which included the suspected shooter's sister. Six of the nine victims are African American. Three are white.
WHIO reported five men and four women were killed in the mass shooting Sunday morning, according to police.
The shooter, identified as Connor Betts, was killed by fast-acting police, authorities said.
Here's what we know about the victims:
Megan Betts, 22
Betts, 22, the sister of the suspected gunmen in the Oregon District mass shooting. She was a student at Wright State University studying environmental science. She planned to graduate in 2020.
Derrick Fudge, 57
Fudge was out with family when he was killed.
“They were all just down there enjoying themselves and had stepped out of, I think, one of the clubs and were in a line to get some food,” his sister Twyla Southall said.
Logan Turner, 30
Turner's mom, Danita Turner, described her son as both "sweet and smart." He had just celebrated his 30th birthday Tuesday and was out with a few friends this weekend in the Oregon District. He had an engineering degree from the University of Toledo and had recently started a job as a machinist.
Nicholas Cumer, 25
Cumer was a student at St. Francis University and graduated from Washington High School in 2012. He was in Dayton as part of his internship program with the Maple Tree Cancer Alliance.
Thomas McNichols, 25
McNichols, known to all as T.J. and a father of four, was a "gentle giant," according to his aunt.
"Everybody loved him," his aunt Donna Johnson said. "He was like a big kid."
Lois Olglesby, 27
Oglesby had recently returned to her work at a day care following maternity leave, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. She is survived by a newborn and an older daughter.
"We grew up as cousins," Oglesby's friend, Darasha Merrett, told the AJC. "We grew up in the same church, on the same drill team. She works at my kids' daycare. We all grew up in this little town. We're all family. We're all hurting behind this."
Saheed Saleh, 39
Saleh, who lived in Dayton, was a native of the Eastern African country of Eritrea, according to WHIO-TV.
Yahya Khamis, president of the Dayton Sudanese community, spoke to WHIO-TV on behalf of Saleh's family and said several members from across the state came to Dayton to pay their respects. They remember Saleh as a kindhearted and hard working person.
Monica Brickhouse, 39
Brickhouse, originally of Springfield, is being remembered by friends for her kindness.
In a Facebook post, friend Brittany Hart wrote that she was "in shock" to learn Brickhouse had been killed, according to WHIO-TV. Hart said Brickhouse was "like another aunt" to her.
“To lose a loved one to senseless violence is just unfair, especially since it could be preventable!!” Hart wrote on Facebook. “I am so sorry this has happened to you all!”
Beatrice Warren-Curtis, 36
Warren-Curtis, 36, was in the Oregon District Saturday evening with her friend Monica Brickhouse, who also died in the tragedy, according to WHIO-TV.
“To lose a loved one to senseless violence is just unfair, especially since it could have been prevented,” a friend told the news station.
