While at a rally in Redding, California, presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump referred to a black supporter he saw in the audience, calling him, "my African American," according to CNN.
"We had a case where we had an African-American guy who was a fan of mine," Trump said, beginning a story about an incident at an earlier rally in Arizona. "Great fan. Great guy."
He then proceeded to point out another African-American man in the audience and says, "Look at my African-American over here. Are you the greatest? You know what I'm talking about?" before going on to describe a March incident in which a black supporter was escorted out of an Arizona rally after assaulting a Trump protester.
Hope Hicks, Trump campaign spokeswoman, said Trump was "just referring to a supporter in the crowd. There's no ill will intended, obviously," and that Trump was "grateful for this person's support."
