It was nice while it lasted.

After a week of high temperatures in the 80s, Atlanta is returning to the 90s Monday with a projected high of 91. A 90-degree streak will take the city all the way into Thursday, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan.

“Super humid. Super hot later this afternoon in the low 90s,” he said. “And a little bit of rain, too. There will be a few showers and storms later today.”

Temperatures are in the 70s to start the day under low cloud cover. Monahan said those clouds will stick around through the day and eventually produce scattered downpours. He expects showers to begin firing up as early as 1 p.m., which will impact students on their way home from school.

Not everyone will see showers, but those that do could experience heavy rainfall, Monahan said.

“They will be scattered around North Georgia late this afternoon,” he said. “And then into early this evening, still some rain. It does dry up overnight, and then we’ll get a more widespread rain chance tomorrow.”

Rain chances are increasing from 30% Monday to 40% Tuesday, according to Channel 2. More rain will not mean cooler weather, however. The projected high Tuesday holds at 91.

Monahan said Wednesday and Thursday also come with 40% chances of rain and highs of 90 degrees. Finally, with even more widespread rain in the forecast, temperatures will fall back into the 80s Friday, he said.

A truck fire on I-75 has the potential to cause problems for the first half of the morning commute. Two southbound lanes are blocked past Ga. 92 while authorities continue cleaning up the fire and a resulting spill, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

“Don’t get on I-75 South leaving Lake Allatoona,” traffic reporter Mark Arum said at 6:30 a.m.

There are “sizeable delays,” he said. Commuters can use Cobb Parkway or I-575 as an alternate.

In Atlanta, Cheshire Bridge Road remains shut down between Faulkner Road and Woodland Avenue after a fire last week under a bridge. While repair work continues, drivers can take Piedmont Avenue as an alternate, according to the Traffic Center.
