Mom who used 13-year-old son in Cobb mall theft gets prison

An Atlanta woman was sentenced to 10 years, to serve two, after being convicted of shoplifting Chanel lotion, perfume and Ray-Ban sunglasses, Cobb County District Attorney Vic Reynolds announced Friday.

The stiff sentence may have had something to do with the fact that Kizzy Shekivus Jenkins, 34, enlisted her 13-year-old son as a partner in crime, Reynolds said.

It was also her fourth conviction for shoplifting, he said.

She was arrested five days before Christmas in 2013 at the Macy’s at Cumberland Mall when store detectives saw the 13-year-old confer with his mom before trying to exit the store without paying for boxes of Chanel lotion, perfume and shower gel, Reynolds said.

As they left the store, a detective stopped them, at which time Jenkins dropped the sunglasses and blamed the entire theft on her son, Reynolds said.

“She showed a blatant disrespect for the property of others, and compounded that with a complete lack of conscience by trying to blame it all on her 13-year-old son,” said assistant district attorney Julianna Peterson, who prosecuted the case.

Superior Court Judge C. LaTain Kell sentenced Jenkins to 10 years, with two years to serve in prison and the rest on probation. He also banished her from Cobb County, which means she cannot come into Cobb except for probation meetings or court hearings.

Kell also ordered that she have no contact with her children until the Division of Family and Children Services has done a report and recommended reunification.
