A man told police investigators he was cleaning his gun when he accidentally shot his girlfriend’s 9-year-old daughter, the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office said.

No charges had been filed by early Tuesday, but the shooting remains under investigation, the Sheriff’s Office said.

“Right now we are looking at primarily to see if the evidence we found on the scene matches the witness testimonials of those who were here,” Capt. Matthew Guthas told Channel 2 Action from the scene Monday afternoon.

The child, whose name was not released, was shot in her side and flown to an Atlanta hospital after being shot at a home near the intersection Ga. 82 and Giles Road, according to police. She is expected to survive her injuries.

The boyfriend of the child’s mother was interviewed by deputies at the scene. His name was also not released.

The girl’s mother and two other children were in the mobile home at the time of the shooting, but were not injured, Channel 2 reported.
