A Clayton County police officer who was wounded late Friday after he attempted to intervene in a domestic dispute remained in the hospital Saturday, a department spokesman said.
Officer Melvin Snell was shot in the shoulder near the intersection of Tara Boulevard and Upper Riverdale Road by a man police said was involved in a “rolling domestic dispute” with a woman. The man, who was shot by another responding officer, died at the scene.
Police have not released the dead man’s name.
Clayton police Sgt. Kevin Hughes said in a news release that a woman struck Snell’s patrol car with her vehicle about 10:15 p.m. Friday. Police said the woman told Snell the father of her children was following her. Another car, driven by the alleged assailant, hit the woman’s vehicle.
Hughes said Snell attempted to intervene in the ensuing dispute when the man pulled a gun and opened fire on the officer, wounding him.
Channel 2 Action News reported Saturday afternoon that Snell was listed in serious but stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital. The station reported Snell has been on the force for nine months.
