A Tennessee man was sentenced to 35 years in prison after being convicted of shooting a man who was sleeping in a car outside an Adairsville gas station, leaving him paralyzed.

Michael Sean Conner, 28, of Hixon, Tenn., is among a trio of suspects who shot the man so they could steal his sedan in 2018, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia said in a news release. The other two people involved in the crime were also convicted and received shorter prison sentences.

The incident took place about 3:35 a.m. on May 7, 2018, at a QuikTrip on Ga. 140, AJC.com previously reported. Jonathan Michael Meyer, who was 30 at the time, was returning home to Florida after attending a wedding, but decided to stop at the gas station for a nap, the release said.

While Meyer was sleeping, Conner and his two accomplices approached the victim’s Toyota Camry, the release said. Conner tapped on the car’s window, pointed a gun at Meyer and shot him in the chest before he had a chance to get out, authorities said.

The incident left Meyer paralyzed from the chest down, the release said.

The next day, Conner was arrested after carjacking two men in Marion County, Tenn., leading to a police chase. His accomplices, Destany Schubert of Fort Oglethorpe and Kristy Lynn Davis of Summerville, were also arrested later that week.

In Meyer’s shooting, Conner was sentenced to 28 years in federal prison, and he received an additional seven years behind bars for the Tennessee carjacking, the release said.
