Details were sketchy Tuesday night in the death of a man who was shot during a Gwinnett police investigation.
Detectives are now trying to determine whether an officer killed the man or whether the man committed suicide, Cpl. Michele Pihera said about 11 p.m.
Detectives were already at a residence on Jackson Shoals Road near Lawrenceville, around 8:30 p.m., investigating a report that a man had made terroristic threats when the man being investigated returned to the home and approached the front door, Pihera said.
“That person at the front door presented a handgun and one of officers discharged a firearm,” Pihera said. “But at the same time the suspect, that person at the front door, may have also possibly fired a weapon in an attempt to commit suicide.”
“Right now we are trying to determine how he is deceased.”
Pihera did not know the nature of the terroristic threats or how many rounds were fired, or whether the dead man fired his weapon or threatened the detectives with it.
“It was all very fluid, rapid and quick,” she said. “We don’t know if this is domestic related at this time. We don’t know whether they were strangers, acquaintances or if they were family.”
The suspect arrived at the home in a minivan, Pihera said. That minivan was left running with the keys inside the vehicle during the incident. The minivan has since been impounded, she said.
