Young Gwinnettians have a chance to lead the 2016 Suwanee Fest Parade.

The winners of the Suwanee Kids Super Contest get the honor of being the grand marshals of the parade during the annual Suwanee Fest in September.

This year’s theme of the parade is “Super City, Super People,” and Suwanee is looking for stories of these super people. Students may submit a written essay or a video entry telling the judges about the “superhero” in their life. That hero may be a teacher, parent, family member, classmate or neighbor. Parents are discouraged from editing their child’s work. The idea is to get the story from the student’s perspective, not through the lens of an adult.

This is the second year the city has held this contest for students in the area to be the grand marshal of the Suwanee Fest parade.

"Last year, we had about 25 entries and three winners," said Amy Doherty, the city's special events manager. "They just wrote about why they loved living in Suwanee."

She anticipates more entries this year since the city added the option to submit a video. Both the winning child and their nominee will be one of the grand marshals of the parade.

"We're hoping that kids can nominate people who make a difference in their lives," Doherty said, "people who have what kids consider to be super powers, like super personalities."

Children from kindergarten through the 12th grade may enter. They must attend a school that serves the city of Suwanee, or reside in Suwanee and attend home school or a private institution.

All entries must be submitted by Aug. 1. The parade takes place Saturday, Sept. 17.
