Police in DeKalb County rushed to help a child who was reported shot, but when they arrived at the scene, she was already gone.

"By the time the police department got on the scene, the alleged victim was already transported by car," DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parish told the AJC.

The girl was shot in the stomach, and a woman took her to DeKalb Medical Center, where she was listed in stable condition.

"It's very likely that she'll live," Parish said.

The shooting occurred around 4 p.m.  in an apartment on Chatfield Drive, which is off North Hairston Road near Stone Mountain.

At least one adult was in the apartment at the time, and investigators are considering the possibility that it was an accidental shooting, Parish said.

No one has been charged with a crime.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
