The Woodstock City Council met in a special called session this week to approve emergency repairs to the Bell Park Drive railroad crossing from Main Street to an industrial park at the north end of town.
The asphalt of the crossing is in such disrepair, cars reportedly have been damaged and trucks are bottoming out on the tracks, which could damage the rails and cause a derailment, according to Public Works Director Pat Flood.
Woodstock will split the project’s cost with the Georgia Northeastern Railroad, Flood said. The railroad will provide the labor, and the city will reimburse its estimated $9,420 cost for materials – rails, ties, concrete panels and other items.
Repairing the approaches, providing for detours and a temporary crossing, and other expenses will be borne by the city, for a total project cost estimated of $18,000 to $20,000, Flood said. Construction may occur the first week in August, possibly the weekend of Aug. 6-7 to minimize the impact on industrial park occupants.
