Woodstock Elementary School can now boast of having the state’s top second-in-command: Rachel Wasserman recently was named the Georgia 2016 National Distinguished Assistant Principal.

Wasserman was awarded the title and $500 at a surprise ceremony attended by students and teachers in the gym of her school.

“You have been chosen by your peers because you exemplify educational leadership of the highest quality,” Hal Beaver, executive director of the Georgia Association of Elementary School Principals, said in presenting the award.

School officials credit her with developing collaborative leadership with teachers and community partners and beginning a positive behavior program and a school garden, among other accomplishments.

Wasserman has been an assistant principal for two years. She previously was a classroom teacher since 2006 and the school’s 2013-14 Teacher of the Year. She has a masters in early childhood education and specialist in educational leadership degrees from Kennesaw State University.

She will be recognized at the principal’s association fall conference and the June 16 meeting of the Cherokee County School Board.
