Woodstock eateries can now operate sidewalk cafes as part of their businesses, subject to certain restrictions.

The Woodstock City Council approved an amendment allowing businesses in several different zoning categories to set up shop on sidewalks, provided that such cafes extend no more than six feet from the face of a building, are partitioned off from the rest of the sidewalk, and leave at least five feet of a clear zone for pedestrians passing by.

The change also allows restaurants with a valid alcohol license to serve drinks to customers outside. City officials say already, two downtown businesses operate sidewalk venues after having gotten city approval, and that there have been few noted issues.
