Woodstock city officials will break ground this weekend on the long-anticipated Amphitheater at City Center project.
The ceremony is set for 7: 15 p.m. Saturday at the Park at City Center, 101 Arnold Mil Road, just before the last concert of the Woodstock summer concert season. The Woodstock City Council approved a $3.24 million contract with the Astra Group, Inc. for construction of the facility Aug. 24.
City manager Jeff Moon said the amphitheater will feature tiered grass seating for as many as 6,000 people, bathrooms, retaining walls and a band shell with a green room. It’ll be used for a variety of outdoor concerts and other events, and will also function as a park on a daily basis.
The city starts demolishing the existing park facilities the week of Sept. 14 and will turn the site over to the contractor Oct. 1. Moon said construction will take nine months to a year.
