Police are investigating after a 24-year-old woman was shot in the face early Saturday in Cartersville.

The incident, which a witness said was an accident, happened around 5:45 a.m. at the Courtesy Inn in the 2300 block of U.S. 411.

A witness told a Cartersville officer that he was in the motel room when a man was showing off a black pistol, according to the police report. The witness told police the woman said, “you couldn’t shoot anybody,” and the man responded, “yea I will, I’ll shoot you,” then jokingly put the gun in the woman’s face. The witness said the woman grabbed the gun and it went off.

The man fled after the shooting, and the witness said he called the police.

The woman was transported by helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, police said. She reportedly was in critical but stable condition Saturday night.

The suspect remains at large.
