A 57-year-old woman died of injuries she received when her stalled vehicle was struck on I-285 early Sunday by an allegedly drunk driver, police said Tuesday.
Evelyn P. Ngoboworigha and Stroyer T. Butler, a 35-year-old passenger in the car, were critically injured after the 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis they were in was rear-ended by a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by 26-year-old Francisco Rodriguez-Vazquez.
Butler remained at Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition in a medically induced coma, Dunwoody police spokesman Tim Fecht said.
Rodriguez-Vasquez fled the scene on foot after the accident, which occurred around 2:15 a.m. Sunday on I-285 West near Chamblee Dunwoody Road.
Rodriguez-Vasquez was apprehended and is now in the DeKalb County jail, charged with vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle, DUI, reckless driving, hit-and-run, driving without a license and obstruction of officers.
Dunwoody police initially went to the scene where Ngoboworigha and Butler were reported stranded. The stranded motorist call was later changed to an accident with serious injuries.
Ngoboworigha was transported to Atlanta Medical Center where she died from her injuries, Fecht said.
