A woman has died after being shot at a MARTA bus stop in DeKalb County, police say.
Police tell Channel 2 Action News they were called to 5900 Fairington Road for a shooting at about 10 a.m. Sunday. They found 19-year-old Marcaysia Dawkins laying on the bench at a MARTA bus stop. She was taken to a local hospital in very critical condition.
Monday morning, police told Channel 2's Tom Jones that Dawkins had died.
Dawkins relatives were shaken by the news and say they really want her killer off the streets.
“She was just a great kid and she did not deserve none of this,” Mia Jones, Dawkins’ aunt, said. “You couldn’t just take what you needed to take and keep it moving? You just had to kill her?”
In surveillance video obtained only by Channel 2 Action News, a man can be seen crossing the street and standing next to the woman at the bus stop.
They speak for about five to six minutes before a struggle ensues and she is shot. The man appears to take something and run away. Police say the suspect may have come off a MARTA bus himself, though it isn't clear.
The family says Dawkins just graduated from Lithonia High School. She worked at a day care center and planned on joining the Navy. They say she was trying to catch a bus to make a simple errand when she was murdered.
“To the person that did it, that was cowardly. To shoot a young lady on a bus stop for a couple of dollars and a cellphone, that’s crazy," Hassan Jackson, Dawkins' uncle, said.
Police aren't sure of the motive but say it could be robbery. The relationship between Dawkins and the man is also unclear at this time, according to police.
Police say they are still looking for the shooter.
