A southwest Atlanta mother died Sunday after being hit by a van being driven by a relative.

The accident happened just before 8 p.m. on Macon Drive.

According to police, Vanicie Gamble, 18, and her boyfriend, Aaron Ramey, were pushing their son in a baby stroller when Gamble fell into the roadway, possibly after tripping over the stroller.

Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones told the AJC that Fred Martin was driving his 1996 Chevrolet van southbound on Macon Drive when he “observed a male, Aaron Ramey, waving his hands as he was walking in the roadway.”

“Martin stated that he veered his vehicle to the left to avoid Aaron Ramey and the victim suddenly appeared in front of his vehicle,” Jones said.

She said Martin, who is related to Gamble, struck the woman with his van. Police said Gamble's mother was a passenger in the van.

Gamble was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where she died of her injuries.

No charges have been filed, Jones said.
