City Schools Decatur recently named veteran Jennifer Querubin the district’s Teacher of Year. Now in her 20th year in the classroom Querubin has taught first grade at Westchester for the last four years. She was chosen from among nine teachers representing each of CSD’s individual schools, the final decision rendered by a nine-person committee of community members, teachers and one student.

“She loves the kids and she’s a fun, energetic teacher,” said Westchester principal Rochelle Lofstrand.

Querubin is Westchester’s first district TOTY since the school reopened in 2014 after getting closed for 10 years.

She graduated in 1998 from the University of West Georgia with an Early Childhood Education degree, then earned her masters in Early Childhood two years later. She’s always taught either first, second or third grade, first for three years at Carrollton City Schools and then 13 years in Rockdale County before coming to Westchester in 2014.

“I one hundred percent always want to stay in the classroom,” Querubin said. “I’m a leader, yes, but I’m also a good soldier. Put me on the front line and I’ll fight for all kids—that’s how deeply I care. The classroom is where the action is.”

Querubin is now eligible for state teacher of the year competition, the winner getting named next spring, date still undetermined.
