Georgia Department of Transportation contractors will close lanes on I-20 westbound between Sweetwater Creek and Ga. 5/Bill Arp Road in Douglas County for deep milling, inlay and resurfacing on the interstate.
Motorists should expect traffic delays and plan for additional travel times, alternate modes of transportation and/or different routes to their destinations, according to a press release.
Weather permitting, these lane closures will take place through June 10 in the project area:
- The left lane and left shoulder lane will be closed each night from 7 p.m. until 2 p.m. the following afternoons and
- The center lane will be closed each night from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following mornings.
These activities are needed to improve the deteriorating condition of the roadway, according to Douglas County Communications and Community Relations Director Rick Martin.
Lane closures are needed to help ensure safety for drivers and workers since large equipment and frequent truck movements are needed on site for these activities, he said.
As always, Martin said Georgia DOT encourages motorists to wear seatbelts, reduce their speeds while traveling through the work zone, eliminate distractions behind the wheel and plan their routes before getting on the road by calling 511 for real-time information on work status and traffic conditions.
Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide, including traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures and delays.
Callers can transfer to operators to request assistance or report incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
In metro Atlanta, motorists also can request HERO assistance by calling 511.
