Metro Atlanta motorists weary of weekend road construction backups will get a break Friday and Saturday, courtesy of the state sales tax holiday.

The state Department of Transportation is suspending construction-related lane closures within five miles of all shopping malls and major shopping districts. The roadwork suspension began at 8 a.m. Friday and runs through 10 p.m. Saturday.

The weather probably wouldn’t have been very conducive to roadwork anyway, according to Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton.

Minton said there’s a 50 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms through Sunday, and a 40 percent chance Monday and Tuesday.

Weekend highs will be in the upper 80s, with lows in the low to mid-70s, just about normal for this time of the year.

The National Weather Service said the primary hazard from any weekend thunderstorms will be heavy rain, which could cause flash flooding, especially if the storms are slow-moving.

Braves fans will be keeping an eye on the skies as the home team brings a 13-game winning streak into Turner Field for a weekend series with the Marlins. Game times are 7:35 p.m. Friday, 7:10 p.m. Saturday and 1:35 p.m. Sunday.

Elsewhere downtown, expect a big, screaming crowd around Philips Arena, where Justin Bieber is in concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday, the Atlanta Dream plays New York at 6 p.m. at Philips Arena.

The Lakewood Amphitheatre hosts the Kiss104.1 Flashback Festival at 6 p.m. Saturday, featuring Cameo, SWV, Brick, Zapp and the Average White Band.
