Regional transportation tax public forum

What: The Atlanta Regional Roundtable will host a public forum for residents to provide input on a list of projects to be funded under a proposed regional transportation tax.

When and where: The forum begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the county government building, 100 Cherokee St. in Marietta

What it means to you: Cobb's largest and most expensive T-SPLOST project would be funding for the beginnings of a transit line, possibly light rail, from the Arts Center MARTA Station to the Cumberland area. Dist. 43 special election

What: Residents in Cobb County's legislative district 43 go to the polls to vote for a replacement for the late state Rep. Bobby Franklin who died in July.

When and where: Polls open at 7a.m. to 7 p.m.

What it means to you: The newly elected representative will serve out the remainder of Franklin's term there early next year. JANEL DAVIS

Milton City Council

What: The City Council will consider formal adoption of its 2012 budget.

When; where: 6 p.m. Monday; Milton City Hall, 13000 Deerfield Parkway

What it means to you: The budget calls for a 6 percent increase in spending over this year. The $18.6 million spending plan includes increases in police, fire and EMS. It also calls for extra spending for road paving and intersection improvements, one-time capital improvements the council will partially fund through its general fund balance. The city has looked to its reserves, which over time have built up, to help fund some of the street projects. The city has already voted to keep the property tax at current levels. PATRICK FOX

Commission to appoint animal task force

What: The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners will consider appointing members to a new animal task force.

When and where: 2 p.m. work session, Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, 75 Langley Drive. Lawrenceville

What it means to you: The task force would look for ways to improve the care of animals in Gwinnett County without spending more money. DAVID WICKERT

Fulton County Commission

What: Commissioners are expected to approve an amended agreement with Union City's South Fulton Municipal Regional Jail to house up to 200 county inmates for $48.75 per inmate per day.

When and where: 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Fulton County Government Center's Assembly Hall, 141 Pryor St., S.W., Atlanta

What it means to you: The new arrangement is expected to put an end to inmates sleeping on floors at the Rice Street jail, which so angered a federal judge enforcing the county's compliance with a consent order that he threatened to lock up commissioners for contempt. The commission could also renew an agreement with Pelham, a city in south Georgia, to house inmates for $35 per day. JOHNNY EDWARDS

Decatur City Commission

What: During its bi-monthly public meeting, the Decatur City Commission will discuss two grants, a Transportation grant and a Liveable Centers Initiative grant.

When and Where: 7:30 p.m. today at the City Commission Meeting Room, 509 N. McDonough St., Decatur.

What it means to you: The money from the two grants, if approved, would go toward pedestrian safety and bicycle trail improvements for the Clairemont-Commerce-Church Street corridor. The Commission will also discuss an agreement with the University of Georgia Program Evaluation Group for evaluating the city's Children and Youth Services After-School Program. Atlanta Public Schools

When and where: 6:30 p.m. Sept. 22, Whitefoord Elementary School, 35 Whitefoord Avenue, Atlanta

Action: Atlanta School Board member Cecily Harsch-Kinnane will host a community meeting featuring interim schools superintendent Errol B. Davis, who will talk about progress made in the system since the controversial cheating scandal broke. ERNIE SUGGS

DeKalb County Schools

What: Community meeting to gather ideas for the school district’s strategic plan.

When and where: 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at school system administrative complex, 1701 Mountain Industrial Blvd., Stone Mountain.

What it means to you: The school board is to revise its strategic plan in February, and is gathering ideas about what’s wanted, what’s working and what the challenges are ahead.
