The Decatur Prevention Initiative is holding a town hall meeting, “Bringing Awareness to Underage Drinking” 6:30 - 8 p.m. Wednesday at The Solarium in Oakhurst, 321 West Hill Street, Decatur.
In a survey taken last spring, half of Decatur’s middle and high school students were asked about alcohol use, with 22 percent of 10th graders and 42 percent of 12th graders saying they consumed alcohol in the past 30 days. Additionally, 15 percent of 10th graders and 23 percent of 12th graders reported binge drinking in the past 30 days.
“We have some numbers that are concerning, and we’re getting some troublesome information from students,” Decatur Police Chief Mike Booker told the AJC. “I don’t know if it’s necessarily worse than 20 or 30 years ago, but it’s definitely something in our community, and we need to talk about it. One very important point is that parents who host [teenage drinking parties] have the most to lose.”
