The Canton Police Department is warning citizens about a phone scam where callers are trying to get credit card numbers to collect "unpaid water bills."
Several residents told police that an unknown caller said the resident's water bill was not paid and that residents can pay the balance over the phone by providing a credit card number.
The city Water Department contacts users only through the mail or by leaving a notice on a door.
Victims of the scam should contact the Canton police at 770-720-4883 or the county at 678-493-4080. Residents can also contact the Water Department at 770-704- 1502 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with questions about their balance.
