Victim leads police to kidnapping, assault suspect

A 29-year-old Ohio man visiting Paulding County has been arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a stranger.

Christian Mejia Ruiz is being held without bond following his arrest Tuesday on kidnapping and aggravated sodomy charges, Sgt. Brandon Gurley with the Paulding County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday. It was the 21-year-old victim, whose name was not released, who led investigators to Ruiz, police said.

"She played a huge role in us being able to solve this so quickly," Gurley told the AJC.

Deputies were called to the Columns Apartments, near Hiram, Monday night when the woman called police after the assault. The woman provided police with a good description of the suspect, who she said was driving a burgundy minivan and pulled a knife.

Ruiz, who investigators said was visiting family members in the complex, allegedly assaulted the woman in the apartment where he was staying, Gurley said.

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 770-443-3015.
