University of Georgia President Michael Adams withdrew the college’s request to replace the historic Legion Pool on campus.

Students and community members protested UGA’s intention to demolish the swimming pool and build a new one closer to campus recreation facilities.

In an Oct. 17 letter asking University System of Chancellor Hank Huckaby to withdraw the proposal, Adams wrote that while the plan makes sense the project may be viewed as “frivolous” in today’s economic situation.

Adams, who is stepping down at the end of June, said it would be appropriate for the next president to “grapple with this matter” as part of the campus master plan.

Six soldiers were honored, each receiving Meritorious Service Medals, Thursday for heroic actions responding to the shooting at Fort Stewart. “One of the things I can say unequivocally is that the fast action of these soldiers — under stress and under trauma and under fire — absolutely saved lives from being lost,” U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll told reporters as the six soldiers stood near him Thursday. “They are everything that is good about this nation.” (Hyosub Shin/AJC)
