The University of Georgia expanded its smoking ban Thursday to bar smoking on the new health sciences campus and prohibit it within 35 feet of doors on the main campus.

UGA already barred smoking inside buildings and residence halls. The amended policy adds bus stops and outdoor covered walkways to the banned areas.

"We want people not to smoke," President Michael Adams said, adding universities ought to set an example.

About a dozen colleges in Georgia and more than 400 nationwide ban smoking, according to the American Nonsmoker's Rights Foundation.
