Imperial Hotel and Collier Heights Community were among the 2014 winners of Atlanta Regional Commission awards.
The renovation of historic Imperial Hotel was selected for the 2014 Development of Excellence award. The property is now known as the Commons at Imperial Hotel. The hotel offers 90 affordable housing units for residents who were previously homeless or who need special services such as counseling.
The Collier Heights community was selected for the Community and Historic Preservation award. The community was planned and developed specifically as a suburban community for upper and middle class African Americans.
Herman Russell, Donald Lee Hollowell, Ralph David Abernathy III and the Rev. Martin Luther King Sr. have been residents of Collier Heights.
