A 38-year-old truck driver has been charged in the Friday crash that killed a Lawrenceville couple on I-985 in Gwinnett County, authorities said.

Stephen Scott, of Lithonia, was charged with following too closely and two counts of second degree vehicular homicide in the accident on I-985 south under the Buford Drive (Ga. 20) overpass, Gwinnett County police said Monday.

Traffic was slowed in the interstate’s southbound right-hand lane due to merging traffic from Ga. 20 about 3:20 p.m. Friday when a box truck driven by Scott slammed into the rear of a gray Nissan Altima, police said.

The truck and Nissan together then crashed into a blue Dodge Ram pickup truck and a maroon Saturn minivan towing a small trailer with an ATV on it.

The impact killed the Nissan’s driver, Donna Kesse, 60, and her husband John Kesse, 62, police said.

The driver and passenger of the pickup were taken to a hospital, where they were treated for injuries and released, police said. The minivan’s driver was not hurt. The identities of those three persons were not released.

Scott also was taken to a hospital, where he was evaluated, released and charged, police said.

He was booked Friday into Gwinnett County Jail and was released Saturday morning after posting bonds totaling $12,700, according to the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office.

Speed and alcohol do not appear to have been factors in the accident, Gwinnett police said.
