A 23-year-old man was killed Wednesday evening after being struck by a train in downtown LaGrange, authorities said.

Officers responded to the intersection of Jenkins Street and Vernon Road shortly before 11:30 p.m. after getting a call about a wreck involving a CSX train, authorities said.

Police searched the area and discovered the body of Lucious Cheeks lying under the train between South Lee and North Lee streets, according to the police report.

It’s unclear exactly what led to the fatal crash, but investigators said they are reviewing surveillance video from the train.

“CSX trains are equipped with video cameras, and we are working with CSX to review the video so that we will know exactly what the victim was doing at the time he was struck,” LaGrange police spokesman Sgt. Robert Kirby said.

An autopsy is scheduled at the GBI Crime Lab, he said.
