More than three hours after a water main broke and a sinkhole opened on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs, the water was shut off near the intersection at Northridge Road, officials said.
Currently all lanes of Roswell Road from Northridge Road to Hightower, including Northridge Parkway, remain closed.
An Atlanta Watershed Management crew shut off the water about 8:30 p.m. and started to assess the damage, according to Channel 2 Action News.
While the Georgia Department of Transportation assesses Roswell Road for damage, Sandy Springs officials said drivers should revise their morning commute as the road is expected to stay closed through Thursday morning.
Officials hope to open two lanes for the morning commute, but aren’t making any promises.
The water main break was reported right before rush hour Wednesday and police quickly closed both lanes of Roswell Road, where there are 16-inch and 8-inch parallel mains.
An apartment complex at 8300 Roswell Road and the Hellenic Towers are affected by a water outage, Sandy Springs Mayor Rusty Paul said.
While Atlanta Watershed provided bottled water for residents, the Sandy Springs Fire Department worked with Towers management to check on seniors, Paul said.
No boil water advisories had been issued by 10:45 p.m.
Paul said Fulton County Schools were notified, conducted a site visit and were working to adjust their bus routes accordingly.
They will notify their families of any route changes, he said.
Officials said the break will affect water pressure in North Springs as well as traffic.
