The scene: about a mile north of Delk Road on I-75 South, Wednesday afternoon at the start of rush hour. All times are approximate:
3:30: A state trooper lights up a dark blue Chevrolet Silverado for driving 98 mph on I-75 south near Chastain Road in Kennesaw.The speed limit there is 70. The truck driver refuses to pull over and keeps going.
3:45: Two more state troopers join in the pursuit. They try to box in the truck in the far left lane, near the median wall, but the pickup rear-ends another vehicle and is forced to stop.
3:45: The pickup's driver, identififed late Wednesday as Israel Vladimir Rodriguez, and three state troopers exchange gunfire. Trooper Jacob Fields is struck in the lower abdomen, below his bulletproof vest, and in the leg. Rodriguez, 26, suffers multiple bullet wounds.
4:00: Trooper Fields and Rodriguez are transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta.
4:15: All six lanes of I-75 South are designated a crime scene; police have shut down all southbound traffic.
4:25: Marietta police tweet that all lanes remain closed and that southbound traffic is being diverted onto South Marietta Parkway, which quickly stacks up.
5:00: State troopers and Cobb County and Marietta police officials have all converged on the scene. The GBI is headed there to take over the investigation of the shootings.
6:55: One southbound lane reopens, Marietta police report.
7:00: Rodriguez is out of surgery and is sent to intensive care. Surgery for Trooper Fields is expected later Wednesday night.
10:20: All southbound lanes of I-75 re-open.
10:30: Rodriguez dies at the hospital.
