Three retirement homes hit by androgynous bandit

Though police have some promising leads, one big mystery remains about the person wanted in burglaries at three metro-area nursing homes.

"We don't know if it's a man or a woman -- we don't want to rule anything out," said Atlanta Police Det. James Polite. "We do believe [the culprit] is wearing a wig."

On Friday, surveillance cameras captured the suspect, donning an unsubtle afro, entering two rooms at St. Anne’s Terrace in Buckhead. Polite said that same person is linked to recent thefts at assisted living facilities in Alpharetta and Roswell.

So far jewelry and credit cards have been reported missing, Polite said.

The suspect is believed to be driving a burgundy or maroon Toyota Corolla with a Georgia tag starting with the letters "W" and "D," Polite said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the suspect to contact 404-816-7067 or call the Crime Stoppers Atlanta hotline at 404-577-8477.
