It depends which city you have your eyes on.

The folks over at Redfin—a real estate analysis website—examined the most expensive homes sold in more than 1,000 U.S. cities and defined a home as luxury if it sat among the top five percent of most expensive homes sold in the city.

In their recent study on luxury home price trends across the nation, analysts named Alpharetta one of the "biggest winners" in the luxury market.

The average sale price of luxury homes in Alpharetta? $1,281,000. The rest of the Alpharetta housing market has an average sale price of about $379,000.

Since last year, luxury prices in Alpharetta have risen 15.8 percent.

"Luxury homebuyers in cities like Longmont, Colorado and Alpharetta, Georgia are most likely full-time residents, rather than foreign investor types," according to the analysis. "With rates hovering near all-time lows, buyers with the means are taking advantage and moving up into higher-priced homes."

Redfin's analysis also shouts out another North Fulton city.

Johns Creek was named one of the "biggest losers" when it comes to the nation's luxury market with an average sale price of $1,110,000.

The rest of the city's housing market has an average sale price of about $391,000.

Since last year, Johns Creek's luxury home prices have seen a 2 percent dip.

So if you've got the means, Johns Creek offers the slightly lower price, but in a dipping luxury market in this second quarter of 2016.

Alpharetta, on the other hand, will buy you luxury in a similar price range in a climbing luxury housing market.

Alpharetta and Johns Creek were the only two Georgia cities named in either the "biggest winners" or "biggest losers" categories.

For background, Redfin's analysis mentions that the nation's luxury home prices in this second quarter of 2016 "inched up" to an average of $1.66 million—an increase of 0.8 percent compared to 2015's second quarter.

During this quarter, the inventory of homes priced above $1 million fell 0.5 percent from last year. Sales for these homes increased 10.7 percent.
