A Gwinnett County family says someone stole the van they use for their special needs child right out of their driveway.
Neighbors say someone broke into several cars Sunday night, and, in this case, they appear to have also stolen a vehicle from a family that needs it the most.
Rebekah Edmonds says she wants to find her van, not just for herself, but for her 12-year-old son Jose.
"We just don't know what to think," Edmonds said.
Edmonds walked to her Gwinnett County driveway Monday morning to find the gray Honda Odyssey gone.
"We needed this van to be able to transport his wheelchair back and forth to his therapies and his doctor's appointments," Edmonds said.
When she adopted Jose at the age of four, he was diagnosed with Apert syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects how the skull is formed.
He communicates by typing, and he has a message for the community.
"Please help find our van," Edmonds said.
His family has been there for more than 50 surgeries, and he will need several more this summer.
For now, they have a rental van for 20 days. It will be a tough financial setback if they don't find their own van soon, Edmonds said.
"We have a little sticker on the back of our car, a magnet, that says 'Choose kind,' and that's my hope for that person, that they'll chose kindness and do the right thing and return it," Edmonds said.
